Fundraising Dinner Held for Assembly Candidate Zakir Chowdhury, CPA Ahead of New York Democratic Primary
USANewsOnline.com: A fundraising dinner was held in support of Bangladeshi community-nominated candidate Zakir Chowdhury, CPA, who is running for the New York State Assembly from District 87 (Bronx) in the upcoming Democratic primary election. The event took place on Sunday night, February 8, at Golden Palace in the Bronx under the banner “Zakir for the Bronx.”
Speakers at the event called on the Bangladeshi community to unite and support Zakir Chowdhury in the upcoming election, emphasizing the importance of community empowerment and representation. The program was attended by community leaders, activists, and supporters from the Bangladeshi-American community.
The event was conducted by Assembly candidate Zakir Chowdhury, CPA. Among those present and delivering remarks were community activist Abdul Wahid Chowdhury Jaki, Mohammad N. Majumdar, Abdus Shahid, Mary Zobaida, Abu Taher, Almas Ali, Nazrul Haque, Sakhawat Ali, Jamal Hossain, Imran Shah Ron, Saidur Rahman Lincoln, Engineer Abdul Khalek, Advocate Redwana Razzak Setu, Hasan Ali, Maulana Azir Uddin, Attorney Apar Box, Khalilur Rahman, Abdul Hashim Hasnu, Riaz Uddin Kamran, Junayed Chowdhury, Mahbub Alam, Jamil Ansari, Syed Sharfin Morshed, Dr. Imam Zakir, A. Islam Mamun, Mohammad Ali, MD Alauddin, Meher Chowdhury, Bilal Islam, Mokhon Mia, Mozzaffar Hossain, Akteruzzaman Happy, Suman, Sonar Bolai, Sarowar Chowdhury, Salma Sumi, Fahmida Chowdhury, Tushar, Rokon, Anik Hasan, Imam Hasan, Adnan, Masum, Mamun, Chowdhury Tanim and many other prominent members of the community.
In his welcome speech, Zakir Chowdhury thanked attendees and shared his personal journey, struggles, and achievements, along with outlining key issues facing the district and possible solutions. He said he arrived in the United States as an immigrant at the age of 21 and lived in a basement while working as a taxi, Uber, and Lyft driver. He emphasized that education was his path forward, eventually earning a degree in accounting, becoming a CPA, and starting his own business.
Seeking the community’s support, Zakir Chowdhury said he has long been working for the welfare of the Bangladeshi community and decided to run in the Democratic primary to serve and represent them. If elected, he pledged to protect community rights and work sincerely to address existing problems.
He also promised to make District 87 more affordable by increasing market competition and implementing effective policies to reduce the financial burden on residents. Highlighting public safety as another major priority, he said many residents worry about safety even when parking their cars or returning home late at night.
Zakir Chowdhury reaffirmed his commitment to standing beside the Bangladeshi community and said he hopes to set an example as an immigrant by contributing positively and bringing pride to the diaspora.
Speakers at the gathering urged voters to elect Zakir Chowdhury as the first Bangladeshi-American Assemblyman in New York State, stating that unity within the community would be key to achieving this goal.
The Democratic Party primary election in New York State is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
